The Primitivo grape has existed in Puglia for more than 2,000 years and was probably imported by Illyrians who originated from the Western Balkans, former Yugoslavia and Albania. Later research has also demonstrated the genetic similarity between the Primitivo and the Zinfandel grape, mainly known in wines from the New World. The Primitivo grape variety has been named from the gfact that it ripens faster than many other grape varieties.
